ELKHART COUNTY – A family found a starving puppy inside of a sealed cardboard box on the road in front of their home Friday morning. The miniature pinscher, found on Blaine Avenue, was scared, cold and malnourished.

It started as a normal morning for Ashley Vanwormer. She put her son on the school bus and got ready for the day. She noticed a box in the road in front of their home, but didn't think much about it. But as she and her husband were leaving, the box caught her eye again.

"We drove out of our driveway and went to take off and I told my husband to stop and back up because I thought there was a dog in the box," Vanwormer said.

The box was duct taped shut, but the small leg of a dog was dangling from a hole.

"It's [the box] not very big for how big [the dog] is, I just hope he wasn't in there all night long," she said.

After attempting to coax the dog out of the box, Vanwormer and her husband took the box and the dog inside, where the puppy warmed up to her and her family.

"He was cold, shivering a lot, he just seemed really happy that I found him and I brought him into our warm house," she said.

He was also very hungry and noticeably malnourished. The dog is very thin.  His ribs, hips and spine show through his skin. Still, the dog was very energetic, playful, and friendly. It played fetch with Vanwormer and nestled in her lap.

"There are plenty of organizations and different ways to find your animal a new home and I just don't think dropping them off on the side of the road in 30 degree weather is a very nice and humane way," Vanwormer said.

Right now, the Vanwormers simply cannot afford a dog, but they will keep him until they can find a good home. You can contact them through email at cavanwormer@yahoo.com
