UPDATE: Granger man killed in Indiana Toll Road crash

January 05, 2012|By Jessica Farrell (jfarrell@wsbt.com)

LAPORTE COUNTY – Police say a Granger man is dead after his vehicle hit a semi on the Indiana Toll Road Thursday evening.

According to police, this happened around 4 p.m. near the 52 mile marker in the eastbound lanes, approximately two miles east of the State Road 39, LaPorte exit. That is near Rolling Prairie.

Officers say a semi driven by Nathan Kassahun, 39, of Chicago was stopped along with other traffic in the right lane while another semi that had crashed into the median ahead was towed away. That’s when police say a Honda CR-V driven by Leonard Daniel Ball III, 69, of Granger ran into the back of Kassahun’s semi for an unknown reason.

Ball had to be extricated from the Honda and was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County coroner from massive blunt force trauma. Kassahun was not injured.

All eastbound lanes were closed until about 6 p.m while the wreck was investigated and cleaned up.
