Do you think traffic could move more smoothly around South Bend Regional Airport? The next phase of construction is about to start.
Lincoln Way West was redirected in 2006 to allow the airport to extend one of its runways. Phase two will extend Lincoln Way from the roundabout at Mayflower Road to the Bypass.
This is one of the last steps in a 20-year-long airport expansion project.
“It has been in the works for an awfully long time and projects like these have to be envisioned years and years ahead of when you actually get around to building them,” said John Schalliol, airport director. “So many things have to happen. We've purchased about 250 pieces of land, some with houses, some with not. Most with houses, and that takes a long time to get that accomplished.”
The new road should be done by November.
