GOSHEN – The first week of January usually includes a lot of winter activities including the Fire and Ice Festival.
The 5th annual Fire and Ice Festival got underway on Friday in downtown Goshen with ice sculptures lining the streets. Carvers from all over the area put their talents to use on by sculpting anything from bugs to blocks. Gina Leichty, coordinator for First Fridays in downtown Goshen, says there is something for everyone.
"This year we've added different pieces. We have over 50 different ice sculptures that will be done by Friday night,” said Leichty. “And then on Saturday we have a competition that is a timed competition, and the carvers are trying to earn cash prizes."
Many of these sculptors do not make a living off of these events but are in it for the fun. Stan Horne is a chef by trade but uses ice sculpting as a challenge to his skills.
