Notre Dame football adds 17 players

The Notre Dame football class of 2016 is complete.  Sixteen high school seniors have sent in their national letters of intent to play at Notre Dame, along with freshman Amir Carlisle who transferred from USC.

Among the 16 players that will be freshmen for the Irish this fall are:

*Nine members of the SuperPrep All-America Team: QB Gunner Kiel, RB KeiVarae Russell, WR Chris Brown, OL Ronnie Stanley, DL Jarron Jones, DL Sheldon Day, DB Tee Shepard, DB Elijah Shumate and DB C.J. Prosise.

*Three members of the SuperPrep Elite 50: QB Gunner Kiel (10th), DB Tee Shepard (22nd) and DB Elijah Shumate (37th).

* Eight members of the MaxPreps Top 200: QB Gunner Kiel (second), DL Jarron Jones (22nd), DB Tee Shepard (39th), OL Ronnie Stanley (116th), DL Sheldon Day (119th), DB Elijah Shumate (149th), WR Justin Ferguson (175th) and RB KeiVarae Russell (183rd).

*Five members of the ESPNU 150: QB Gunner Kiel (52nd), WR Justin Ferguson (85th), DB Tee Shepard (90th), DL Jarron Jones (102nd) and DL Sheldon Day (143rd).

*Eight members of the Rivals.com 250: QB Gunner Kiel (20th), DB Tee Shepard (76th), DB Elijah Shumate (113th), RB KeiVarae Russell (124th), OL Ronnie Stanley (176th), RB Will Mahone (197th), DL Jarron Jones (199th) and DL Sheldon Day (244th).

*Nine members of the Scout.com Top 300: QB Gunner Kiel (38th), DB Tee Shepard (39th), DL Sheldon Day (50th), DB Elijah Shumate (55th), OL Ronnie Stanley (66th), RB Will Mahone (201st), RB KeiVarae Russell (207th), DL Jarron Jones (229th) and DB CJ Prosise (276th).

ESPNU ranked him the third-best QB in the country, second-best player in the Midwest and top player in Indiana . . . listed 10th player nationally on SuperPrep Elite 50 team . . . rated number-one quarterback nationally and SuperPrep Midwest Offensive Player of the Year . . . named top player in Indiana on Detroit Free-Press Best of the Midwest team . . . received 2011 Indiana Mr. Football Award from Indianapolis Star . . . named Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year for 2011 . . . named to Indiana Football Coaches Association Top 50 all-state team for 2011, as one of three quarterbacks selected . . . Associated Press Indiana Class 4A first-team al-state quarterback selection . . . threw for 2,517 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior in 2011, while also rushing for 482 yards and 11 TDs . . . helped East to 12-2 record and Indiana Class 4A state semifinals in 2011 . . . career statistics included 7,175 passing yards . . . honorable mention Associated Press 5A all-state pick as junior in 2010 after throwing for 2,500 yards and 25 TDs and also rushing for 425 yards and six TDs . . . played in U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio . . . uncle Blair Kiel played quarterback at Notre Dame from 1980-83 (throwing for 3,650 career yards in 29 career starts) and also spent seven seasons in NFL with Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Green Bay . . . enrolled at Notre Dame for 2012 spring semester . . . coached by Bob Gaddis at Columbus East High School . . . born July 23, 1993.
