January 2012 will go down as a wet ’n' wild month across Michiana as we’ve seen rain, snow, cold, and warmth. Here is a recap of the month of January; most of the information was provided by the National Weather Service.

We started off 2012 with temperatures in the middle 40s to near 50 degrees, only to have over 8 inches of snow fall on us by the end of Jan. 2.That snow certainly did not last long as temperatures reached the lower 50s by Jan. 6.

The rest of the month did not see temperature swings as large, but swings from the 20s to 40s seemed to occur each week.

By the end of the month, 35 inches of snow had fallen (14.4 inches abov normal), making January 2012 the 10th snowiest on record.

After having little to no snow much of this season, season totals were only 2.4 inches below normal for our area at the start of February.

Although we had many temperature swings, most of the really cold air steered clear of Michiana.

The average temperature for January was 29.4 degrees, which was 5 degrees above average.

The warmest January ever on record was in 2006 with an average of 35.8 degrees.

The coldest day of January was the 20th when highs only reached 16 degrees, while the warmest was the 31st with a high of 56.

One temperature record was broken in January, in fact, it was shattered. The low on Jan. 31 was an incredible 45 degrees, breaking the old record of 37 set back in 1988.

The roller coaster weather ride looks to continue in February, so if you like warm or cold conditions, you'll find your favorite weather in Michiana.
