Driver strikes Bristol child who just stepped off school bus

February 07, 2012|WSBT Report

BRISTOL — A Bristol man was cited by Elkhart County police for "improper braking" after he struck an 8-year-old girl who had just stepped off a school bus Monday afternoon in the 21000 block of S.R. 19.
Timothy Risner, 35, told police he saw the school bus stopping in front of him and he tried, but could not stop his car. Risner said he swerved to the right of the bus when his brakes failed to stop his westbound car on S.R. 120, west of C.R. 19 about 3 p.m.
The 8-year-old was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of an ankle injury.
Indiana law requires drivers to stop when approaching a school bus from any direction, if the bus is stopped with its flashing red lights activated and its stop arm extended.
