Antwon Jones named new Niles football coach

March 22, 2012|by Pete Byrne (pmbyrne@wsbt.com)

NILES - South Bend Washington head football coach Antwon Jones is the new head football coach at Niles high school.

"I'm looking forward to building a program and winning a lot of games" Jones told WSBT.

Jones was introduced on Thursday, where he had a chance to address his new team for the first time.

Jones comes to Niles following an 11-4 season at Washington, where he took the Panthers to the 4A state title game. Jones' impact with the Washington football program was immediate, and powerful.  He inherited a team that went 0-10 in 2007, and immediately turned the program around, going 7-3 in his first season at Washington, and winning 8 games the following year.

"It wwas a hard move", Jones said of his decision to leave Washington.  "I love my kids at Washington, but when it came down to it, I had to do what was best for my family."

Jones is charged with turning around a Niles program in a similar fashion to which he did South Bend Washington.  The Vikings have recently fallen on hard times. Niles has posted 8 consecutive losing seasons.  They finished 4-5 in 2011.

"I'm looking forward to getting a lot of these kids to different levels of competition in college.  I think they have a lot of talent.  I think this is a gold mine we just hit.  I feel very lucky at this point."
