Hundreds of area students may have to repeat the third grade next year after failing IREAD, Indiana's new reading test.
Students took that test last month in response to a state law to make sure students are reading at a third grade level by the third grade.
They get two chances to pass the test or they could be held back.
The results are coming in to school districts across the state and here's a look at some of ours:
- In South Bend, 400 students failed. That's about 27 percent of the corporation's third-graders.
- 28 percent of Elkhart third graders didn't pass.
- 10 percent of Penn-Harris-Madison students.
Students in each district who failed are working with reading coaches and will take a summer reading program. Once that program is over, they'll get another chance to take the test.
