4,000 pounds of molten metal at Elkhart Brass Manufacturing had firefighters on standby Monday afternoon after a power outage in the area took away the company's ability to cool it.
There has been no fire, but firefighters were at the scene just in case. The CEO of the company told us this is normal procedure during an extended power outage.
One worker at Elkhart Brass, which makes firefighting equipment, said the workers evacuated as soon as the power went out and they were sent home for the day.
The outage also took out traffic lights along Nappanee Street. Police were out helping to direct vehicles.
An AEP spokesperson told us the outage was caused by a transformer failure and they were working to fix it. Estimated restoration time was 4 p.m.
