SOUTH BEND — A day after the South Bend Community School Corp. board voted in favor of Superintendent Carole Schmidt's $12 million budget reduction plan ... some parents are confused and concerned.
Closing two schools and laying off teachers and aides are among ways to reach the $12 million in cuts needed to put the school district's finances back in the black.
Last year, the district lost more than 300 students to the new school voucher program ... causing the district to lose $2M because of it.
Schmidt tells WSBT there might be some "give" with the roughly 80 teacher layoffs expected.
Action timeframe? Closing two schools likely another year out. But, come June, the district will not replace retiring teachers and staff. Teachers to be laid off will receive their notices by July 1.
