Phone companies have noticed people are using their cell phones less as a phone because they're more than a phone.
"We’ve seen minute usage go down quite a bit,” said Bontrager. “But text messaging, data usage, things like that when you're connecting onto the internet [have increased]."
"I can see myself getting all caught up in the computer age and all the apps and playing with everything other than just using it as a phone," said Granzo.
And smart phones are slowly making some things obsolete...like a phone book.
"I have a phone book at home but I don't use it at all,” said Donald Jackson. “Do I have a map in my car, no, I use my navigation."
"No organizers, I can put all my calendars and appointments in it," said Granzo.
"It’s really absolutely amazing how much more it's being part of your everyday, more or less, than just your phone," said Bontrager.
You could easily fill a small room with all the items it takes to do the basic functions of a normal Smartphone. From a regular landline phone with voicemail to a computer, to an alarm clock or wristwatch. From a still camera to a video camera, TV, radio, books, magazines, maps, I could go on and on. It’s a variable Swiss army knife of technology.
"Basically it's limitless right now, like I said besides the unrealistic things,” said Jackson. “It's pretty much everything you could ever imagine."
"I think the only thing I could think of would be the Star Trek thing where you could phaser and you can transport yourself from one place to the other that would probably be cool," said Granzo.
While we're nowhere near having molecular transporters in our pockets, smart phones can do things like start your car, unlock your house and do nearly everything a personal assistant can except get you coffee....or can it?
Smart phones are moving closer to being the world's dominant technology. 2011 marked the first year more smart phones were sold than tablets, net books, laptops and desktop PCs combined. That’s according the market research firm Canalys.
And why wouldn't everyone want to have something that keeps them so connected?
"I got kids, I got her, so everything revolves around a cell phone nowadays," said Jackson.
"Once you have a Smartphone you really get used to that convenience factor that you really get with it and all the things you can do with it," said Bontrager.
While many people are still hesitant to jump on the Smartphone bandwagon for whatever reason, those who use them and those that sell them say once a Smartphone gets a hold of you...you won't be able to go without it.
"Everybody has their own little part that says the Smartphone works great for me because of this,” said Bontrager. “If you don't have that experience as far as a Smartphone you really will have something if you get one in your hands and really kinda use it."
So with as fast as technology is evolving the list of things smart phones do for us will continue to grow. And who knows maybe one day it will even do our jobs for us.
