May 24, 2012|By Don Wagner (dwagner@wsbt.com)

MICHIGAN CITY – Michigan City police say an altercation may have led to the shooting of a 24-year-old woman late Wednesday night.

Brittany Kelley was shot several times in the area of 11th and Lafayette Streets around 11:20. Investigators believe an earlier scuffle between several women led to the gunshots. Several vehicles were seen in the area just before the shooting, and authorities are looking for information on the drivers.

Kelley was taken to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital but has been released. People with possible leads are asked to call Michigan City Police Detective Corporal Al Bush at (219) 874-3221 extension 341.

Police Chief Mark Swistek wants to use the incident as a reminder for us that if we see anything suspicious in our neighborhoods during the Memorial Day weekend, we should immediately call the police department.
