SOUTH BEND – The condition of a South Bend man admitted to the Fort Wayne Burn Center after police say his girlfriend poured boiling water on him as he slept has been upgraded from critical to serious.

When police went into the home, they found the man with severe burns to his arms and human flesh on the floor next to the soaking-wet bed.

It happened around 3:30 Saturday morning in the 500 block of East South Street.

Police arrested 41-year-old Tearsa Broadnax for the crime. They say she was found standing in the street bragging about the incident.

According to the police report, Broadnax and her boyfriend have a history of abuse. Broadnax told police she poured the boiling water on him in retaliation for a previous fight. She later changed her story when she realized she was under arrest, telling officers she was pretending to cook and splashed her boyfriend with the water so she could flee the home.
