Special investigator in Homicide complaint could be named today

June 11, 2012|WSBT-TV Report

Today we could learn the name of the independent investigator picked to look into claims the head of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Division threatened a South Bend police officer.

South Bend police Corporal Jack Stilp claims Commander Tim Corbett threatened him for talking about the recorded phone calls at the center of the wiretapping investigation at South Bend police.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office told us Friday they have been interviewing someone. If a contract is worked out, the office could make an announcement today.

The investigation led to the firing of South Bend police communications director Karen DaPeape and the demotion of Chief Daryl Boykins.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg tells our news partners at the South Bend Tribune the next Police Chief may be hired from outside the department. That hasn't happened since 1939.

Lieutenant Steve Noonan, President of the South Bend Fraternal Order of Police, says the investigation has affected officer morale, and it's time to move on.

It's unknown how long the independent investigation into the accusations against Commander Corbett will last.

Friday Corbett told us he had no comment.
