A 23-year-old South Bend woman who has been kept in a medically-induced coma since a crash in Berrien County earlier this month has died.
The two-vehicle crash happened in Bertrand Township just after midnight on Sunday, June 3. Danny Engdahl, 57, of Niles was traveling west on U.S. 12 near Bakertown when police say Heather Baker, who was eastbound, drove her Chevy Cavalier over the center line for an unknown reason.
Baker hit Engdahl’s Ford Ranger head-on. Everyone else involved in the collision was treated at the scene, but Baker was taken to Memorial Hospital in critical condition with blunt force trauma injuries to the head.
Baker was kept in a medically-induced coma at Memorial until her death just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to St. Joseph County Coroner Randy Magdalinski.
Baker was a 2007 Penn High School graduate.
