LAKE COUNTY, Ind. — A moving company truck, stalled on I-80 at the 12.8 mile marker in Lake County during rush hour Tuesday evening, was first sideswiped by a semi and then rear-ended by an extended cab pickup truck.
The pickup truck driver, Joshua Garner, 20, of Griffith, Ind., died at the scene. Police said Garner was changing lanes when his truck hit the rear of the moving truck.
Indiana State Police reported when the moving truck from Two Men and A Truck company stalled in the middle right lane of the four-lane highway, its driver DeAndre Perry, 22, of Mishawaka, activated the truck’s four-way emergency lights. The truck is owned by Vesco Movers Inc. in Osceola.
The semi driver did not stop, police said, after that truck scraped the driver’s side door of the moving truck.
Four passengers in Garner’s pickup truck were injured.
Joshua Garner’s 19-year-old sister Amber was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with non-life-threatening leg injuries. Keith Halicky, 18, of Thornton, Ill, was also taken to North Lake for treatment of non-life-threatening facial injuries. Katherine Metzcus, 17, of Lansing, Ill., was taken to North Lake with a life-threatening head injury. Eugene McCall, 20, also of Lansing, Ill., was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
