South Bend competing with the world for jobs

June 21, 2012|WSBT-TV Report

SOUTH BEND – South Bend needs more jobs, and the city is competing against the world for them.

With that in mind, right now Mayor Pete Buttigieg and the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce hosted an all-day economic summit at the Century Center downtown on Thursday.

About 200 people attended. They included local organizations, businesses and workers.

The Mayor says part of Thursday’s presentation was designed to get local people understanding how outsiders view the city, when they consider bringing jobs here.

“One of the things you are going to hear is the quality of life is so important to the growth of a city,” said Buttigieg. “And a thriving downtown is part of that. Certainly, we want to see more life downtown, more retail downtown. We also need to turn and face our river.”

The Mayor says South Bend is telling the world the city is open for business and wants economic growth. He says the community is ready to come together and break through old habits.
