Indiana State Police have released the name of the Michigan City police officer who shot a 19-year-old man during a scuffle Wednesday night.
Six-year police veteran Patrolman Ron Skibins has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard Michigan City Police policy.
The investigation shows 19-year-old Daniel Sherrod, Jr. of Michigan City ran from a traffic stop Wednesday night and soon after was shot by Skibins during a struggle. Sherrod was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he was in serious condition, as of Thursday afternoon.
An ISP news release detailed the events:
- Two Michigan City officers in uniforms and assigned to the Safe Streets Team, stopped a 2011 Chevy Malibu for a traffic violation on Welnetz Road at 5:53 p.m. Wednesday. Four people were in the car, including Daniel Sherrod Jr.
- Sherrod ran from the traffic stop scene, with one of the two officers in pursuit. Sherrod entered an unlocked, occupied apartment in the Salem Port complex. The officer and Sherrod struggled.
- Again outside the apartment, Sherrod tried to remove the officer’s gun, but the officer was able to gain control of his gun and fired, striking Sherrod in the abdomen.
- Sherrod again ran about ¼ mile, where police found him in an acquaintenance’s apartment in the Dody Street complex.
- Sherrod was taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City and later airlifted to South Bend. Early Thursday morning, a Memorial Hospital nursing supervisor had no information available on Sherrod.
- The officer was not injured.
Once ISP’s investigation is finished, information will be sent to the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
