Sunday morning fire destroys Elkhart County home

June 24, 2012|WSBT-TV Report

BAUGO TOWNSHIP – An Elkhart County family is trying to come to grips with the loss of their home to fire early Sunday morning.

Around 3:30 a.m., Baugo Township firefighters were called to the 56700 block of Boss Blvd, just north of Old US 33. Three generations lived in the home – Richard Moore, his wife, their son and their son’s 10-year-old daughter.

They smelled smoke and were able to get out safely before the fire department arrived.

"I went to bed, then my wife woke me up and said there was smoke coming in the bathroom," said Moore. "She went out to the backdoor to see if she could see where the smoke was coming from and saw that the house was on fire, and ran and got everybody out of the house and then called the fire department."

The family lost about everything in the blaze, and the house was destroyed. Everything inside had smoke, water or fire damage.

Moore says his family basically just has the clothes on their back. "Most of our clothes, all of our furniture, a lot of our nostalgic pictures that we have that can't be replaced."

Baugo Twp. fire investigators are trying to figure out what started the blaze and where it began in the home.

"You never know, it could happen to anybody," Moore reflected. "Fire don't discriminate against anybody, it doesn't matter if you are super rich or you don't hardly have a dime to your name. You know you could lose pretty much everything through a fire either way."

Several hours after leaving the scene, firefighters were called back to the home when the structure rekindled, but they were able to quickly bring it under control.
