Believed to be doing a slow burn for several days, by Wednesday night a woods fire consumed 20 acres off Nutmeg Road near 19th Road in Marshall County.
Argos Fire Chief Mark Dean told WSBT three of 37 firefighters suffered heat exhaustion during the nearly six-hour battle to beat down the fire.
Firefighters from three departments responded to the "woods fire" call about 6:30 p.m. The fire's cause is undetermined, Dean said.
"The fire had been burning slowly for quite some time. By the time we were called and got there, some trees were burnt in half and falling over," Dean said. "It was a heavily wooded area that was pretty secluded and it was about 100 yards from a house.”
The firefighters who suffered heat exhaustion were treated at the scene.
