ELKHART – An Elkhart teen is behind bars for shooting at an investigator with the county prosecutor’s office.
Around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Investigator Dave Floerchinger was trying to serve an arrest warrant in the 500 block of Sherman St. when some people approached him.
Floerchinger identified himself as a law enforcement officer. That’s when one person fired a gun in the direction of him. Public Information Officer Lt. Laura Koch says Floerchinger and his car were hit by projectiles, and he was taken to Elkhart General Hospital where he was evaluated and later released.
During the course of the investigation, Elkhart police officers gathered enough information to arrest 18-year-old Guillermo Belmares of Elkhart for his involvement in the shooting.
Belmares faces a charge of attempted murder and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Saturday.
