WSBT has been inundated with calls and emails from viewers about a phone scam that is targeting their cellphones.
It's a robo-call claiming to be from 1st Source bank advising that your MasterCard has been deactivated. It prompts you to press one to activate your card...and then if you do it will prompt you to enter your card number.
We have talked with 1st Source and they assure us these calls are not legitimate. First Source's head of retail banking says the calls are being placed randomly to customers and non-customers alike. They suspect First Source's name is being invoked since it's one of the biggest banks in the area.
So if you get such a call, simply hang up.

South Bend, IN: Fraudulent telephone calls were made Sunday, July 8, throughout Michiana to 1st Source clients and non-clients alike, informing them that their 1st Source MasterCard was deactivated. These calls were not made by 1st Source and instead were phishing attempts to obtain card information. The callers were instructed to enter their full card number and PIN to reactivate their card.
No client information was taken from 1st Source. It seems a robotic calling system was used focusing on the 574 area code and randomly selecting telephone numbers to call. Typically, fraudsters blanket an area with calls, hoping even 1% of those called would give the needed information. These scams have hit the largest banks in the past. Now the fraudsters have moved to regional and community bank clients hoping to trick unsuspecting people into giving up their card information.
1st Source is working with authorities in an attempt to isolate the scam. Banks report incidents of this nature to the US Treasury, who then work with the regional branch of the F.B.I. to investigate.
If a person receives a call like this, they should hang up and provide no information to the caller. Unfortunately, if someone has been tricked into releasing information, they should contact their bank immediately. 1st Source clients should stop in or talk to their neighborhood banking center, or call the client service center at 235-2000 (after hours call (800) 554-8969). The card will be cancelled and a new one issued. Clients should also review their account history to ensure no fraudulent transactions have taken place.
