Smoking restricted at Elkhart County 4-H Fair this year

July 13, 2012|WSBT-TV Report

GOSHEN – You won’t smell much smoke at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair this year, unless it’s from the exhaust of the tractor pulls, motorcycle races or demolition derby.

The fair board has voted to limit cigarette smoking on the Goshen fairgrounds.

Fair Board Chairman Jack Lengacher says they’re not going to allow smoking in parking lots and most areas of the fair because of the extremely dry conditions.

Lengacher says there are 60 acres of parking, and the dry grass can easily catch fire.

He says it’s not a smoking ban. 8 designated places will be set up for smoking inside the fair. Those places will be concrete areas with cigarette trays.

The parking crews will monitor the ‘no smoking’ policy in the parking lots. Lengacher says it’s basically “if you don’t want your car going up in flames, don’t smoke.”

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair kicks off next Friday, July 20 and runs through the 28th.
