Police have made an arrest in the murder of an 84-year-old Mishawaka woman killed in late 2011. Lois Hickey was found dead in her home in the 300 block of East Donaldson on Dec. 29 by a neighbor.

Tuesday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office confirmed multiple charges have been filed against 19-year-old William Karimu of Mishawaka. Murder charges were actually filed March 2, but were sealed until Karimu could be arrested. He had fled the U.S. to Sierre Leone in Africa.

The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office has been working with the U.S. Justice Department to prepare and file extradition papers to apprehend Karimu. After the papers were filed, officials in Sierre Leone worked to find and capture the suspect, and they were able to nab Karimu on Tuesday.

Karimu's family is from Africa.

The United States government is in the process of extraditing Karimu back to St. Joseph County to face murder charges.
