A 35-year-old man wanted in connection to a fatal July LaPorte County crash was arrested in the City of South Bend.
LaPorte County police were notified by South Bend Police and the United States Marshals Service John Mikle was arrested and taken to LaPorte County Jail. A warrant for his arrest was issued Aug. 14 by the LaPorte County Circuit Court.
Bond was set at $35,000. A court hearing is scheduled for Friday.
After causing a head-on crash July 19 that killed a Valparaiso woman and seriously hurt two young sisters, Mikle was found to have extremely high PCP levels in his blood.
Killed in the early-morning crash on Joliet Road near Westville was 26-year-old Katherine Atkins. Injured were Neilah Maule, 7, and her 5-year-old sister, Jaidyn Maule.
Mikle is charged with:
- Reckless homicide (C felony)
- Causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (C felony)
- Causing serious bodily injury when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (2 counts) (D felony)
- Operating vehicle with Schedule I or II controlled substances in person’s body (C misdemeanor).
