The crash, which happened on Weaver between C.R. 6 and C.R. 10 around 7:40, involved an SUV and sedan.

Police say one of the vehicles crossed over the grass median and collided with the other. It was a t-bone-style collision.

Two people, a male and a teenage girl, in the sedan had to be cut out. The male, who was driving, was taken to Memorial Hospital in unknown condition.

The teen girl in the sedan was taken to Elkhart General Hospital where she died of her injuries.

Elkhart Community Schools spokesperson Jodee Shaw tells WSBT the girl was a freshman at Memorial High School.

"The Memorial staff has been alerted, and counselors will be available to help studnets deal with this tragedy on Monday," said Shaw.

North Side Middle School Principal Sara Jackowiak knew the girl from her time at North Side. "She was friendly, outgoing and well-liked by teachers, students and staff. "She had a bright future in front of her."

The driver of the SUV was taken to Elkhart General as a precaution and has since been released.

Lt. Laura Koch with Elkhart Police said that witnesses were taken to the police department for statements.
