Elkhart police release name of teen killed in car crash

ELKHART – We now know the name of the teen killed in a traffic crash Friday near the Elkhart Municipal Airport.

Maria Ramirez, a freshman at Elkhart Memorial High School, was taken to the hospital after the car she was riding in T-boned with an SUV.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. Friday on John Weaver Parkway between County Roads 6 and 10.

Police say Ramirez was taken to Elkhart General Hospital where she later died.

The driver of her car, Christian Castro, was taken to South Bend Memorial and is still listed in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV was released from the hospital.

School officials at Elkhart Memorial say counselors will be on hand to help students deal with this tragedy on Monday.
