UPDATE: Man found in barrel was local business owner

September 21, 2012|Ted Land, WSBT News

We're learning more about a man found dead in a barrel floating in the St. Joseph River.

Elkhart County police are now trying to figure out how the body got there.

Family members confirm to WSBT the body found is Mark Miller. The 44-year-old father of five had been reported missing, last seen two weeks ago.

Miller owned a tattoo shop in Elkhart. In 2010, WSBT even covered a charity event Miller's business "The Tattoo Shop" on U.S. 33 put on. It benefited Church Community Services, something Miller used to be a client of.

A crew clearing debris from the river found the body Thursday near the Six Span Bridge. It was in a 55-gallon drum, about 10 feet from shore. Right now police don't know how long it was in the water.

Police say the obvious – that the body was in a barrel raises alarming questions.

We could learn more about the circumstances surrounding Mark Miller's death after an autopsy scheduled for Friday afternoon.
