David McCoy joined WSBT-TV in March 2010 as the weekend sports anchor.

David grew up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. When he was in second grade, his teacher asked his classmates what they each thought was the best job in the world. David said it had to be, without a doubt, being a sports broadcaster.

As David grew up, his love for sports grew stronger. Ten years after telling the class what the best job in the world was, David called the program director at the local radio station (WHBL) and asked for an internship during his senior year of high school. He was hooked. And when David’s hockey team won the WAHA state championship, it was especially cool to hear the newsman recap the score, since David was in the studio.

After graduating from high school, David attended the University of Minnesota and majored in Journalism and Mass Communication. At Minnesota, he started a sports department at the student radio station and worked as a sports reporter for the Minnesota Daily.

He also got to learn from some of the best in the business through a variety of internships and freelance work, at places like WCCO-TV, KDLT-TV, KFAN Radio, the St. Paul Pioneer Press and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He even got to do play-by-play for a local cable station in the Twin Cities. When people asked him why he spent so much time working, he’d simply respond, “Hey man, it’s the best job in the world!”

Before coming to WSBT, David worked at KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, SD and KTIV-TV in Sioux City, IA. A story he did while in Sioux Falls was named sports story of the year by the South Dakota Associated Press.

When David came to Indiana in March 2010, it was somewhat of a return to his family’s roots. His dad’s parents both grew up in Milan, Indiana. Maybe you’ve heard of their basketball team. David’s great aunt Jo was a senior at Milan High School the year they won the state title, inspiring a little movie called “Hoosiers.” David has won a few things in Indiana too, though the awards from the Associated Press aren’t nearly as big.

It’s funny how things come full circle. David is now working at “the best job in the world,” and he’s also married to.... a teacher. David and his wife, Emily, live in Mishawaka with their daughter, Madelyn, and beagle, Mya.
