LAGRANGE COUNTY – A one-car crash in LaGrange County has left one person dead and another badly hurt.

It’s a crash the county sheriff’s department blames on excessive speed.

It happened around 9:40 p.m. Saturday on C.R. 600 near N 250 E in Lima Township.

When officers got to the scene, they saw 25-year-old Efren Caballero of Lagrange had been thrown from the wreckage and 23-year-old passenger Hermosa Murray of Elkhart was laying on the ground partially under the car.

Police say Caballero was driving his 1997 Honda Civic when he lost control and hit a utility pole. He died on the scene of massive head injuries.

Murray was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with head and neck injuries.

Investigators are convinced Caballero was driving too fast, and the coroner’s office is waiting for toxicology results to determine if alcohol may also have been involved.

Police say Murray was wearing her seat belt while Caballero was not.
