ST. JOSEPH COUNTY – A Granger woman accused of dumping her newborn baby in a restaurant trash bin faces up to 20 years in prison for feticide.

In a news release issued Monday night by St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett, 32-year-old Purvi Patel was taken into custody.

Late Saturday, police found an infant dead inside a bag in a Dumpster behind Moe’s Southwest Grill in Granger’s University Crossing Shopping Center.

This was after police say Patel admitted herself to a local hospital.

Feticide is defined by Indiana Code 35-42-1-6 as follows:

“A person who knowingly or intentionally terminates a human pregnancy with an intention other than to produce a live birth or to remove a dead fetus commits feticide, a class B felony.”

Based on state law, a person who commits a class B felony faces a fixed prison term between 6 and 20 years, with the advised sentenced being 10 years.
