Tuesday morning got off to a messy start as dozens of weather-related accidents were reported across our area, but some good news finally came at the end of the morning commute. The U.S. 20 Bypass from Elm Road to State Road 19 in Elkhart County was shut down for more than two hours because of the very slick conditions. However, it was reopened by 9 a.m. Lt. Travis Adamson of the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to numerous crashes on the U.S. 20 Bypass.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY -- The first measurable snowfall of the season has already created some problems on roads across St. Joseph County. Around 11:30 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to the bypass -- near the Ironwood exchange at the bridge on the report of an accident. At least five cars were involved in a chain-reaction style accident, which flipped a pick-up truck. The driver of that truck was OK, but two other people involved in the crash were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.

An update to a deadly hit-and-run: A Mishawaka man pleaded guilty Monday in the Elkhart County accident that killed a man back in June. Kevin Meyer, 19, pleaded guilty to not stopping after an accident that resulted in death. Meyer hit and killed 60-year-old Raymundo Sabag who was riding his bike to work on County Road 17 south of the US 20 underpass. At the time police said he had lights and reflectors on. Meyer will be sentenced in January.

18-year-old Zion Carlstrom is getting stronger and steadier as she recovers from a hit-and-run accident that almost took her life. “I know that God saved me,” she said recently during one of her intense physical therapy sessions, “because he has something greater planned for me.” Carlstrom was riding her bicycle along a county road in Middlebury this past July, when a driver hit her from behind, and then left the scene....

DOWAGIAC, Mich. - Two people were hurt when a car they were in flipped over in Cass County early Sunday morning. It happened at Red Mill Road and Downey Street north of Dowagiac around 4:30 a.m. According to initial police reports, both people were believed to be trapped. One was said to be unconscious but apparently regained consciousness, and one may have suffered a broken arm or leg. When the call first came in, police were not sure where the rollover accident happened but got there within about 7 minutes.

It was a terrible accident that could have ended horribly if not for the quick action of a police officer. Joshua Perez nearly died after getting his throat trapped in the window of a car earlier this month. Wednesday Joshua got to meet the man who saved his life, Benton Township Police Officer Steve Morrow. When the two first met, little Joshua wasn't too sure about the Police Officer standing in his living room. But by the end of the visit, you could tell Joshua had made a lifelong friend.

STEUBEN COUNTY - A Ligonier man has been hurt in a deer hunting accident in southeastern Steuben County. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 80-year-old Carl Folk, Jr. fell from his tree stand. Conservation Officer Todd Lang says Folk was trying to climb down from his stand after legal hunting hours. With help from his son, Folk attempted to maneuver himself around to step off the platform of the tree stand and onto the ladder leading to the ground.

ELKHART COUNTY -- She spent months at an Indianapolis rehab center following a bike accident, but now a Middlebury girl is reportedly coming home. In July, 17-year-old Zion Carlstrom was hit by a car while riding her bike on County Road 35 in Elkhart County. Since then, she has been recovering in Indianapolis. But a post on a support page for Carlstrom says she did so well in her recovery that her release date has been pushed up to Friday. No one has been charged in this case, police know who the driver is who hit Carlstrom, and then left the scene.

OSCEOLA - On June 3rd, a local teacher and drag racer, was severely injured in an accident at the Osceola Dragway. But his recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. WSBT's Ed Ernstes was there on Sunday when Ryan Gortney thanked part of the team that helped to save him.

Police have released the name of a Rochester man killed while hunting in Fulton County. Kenneth Moore, 28, died after getting shot in the head by another hunter. The Department of Natural Resources says Moore, two other adults, and a 12-year-old were out hunting on private property near North 400 West and 250 North.. At some point, they split into two groups. Moore and the 12-year-old were walking along a corn field when one of the hunters from the other group shot him. A spokesperson from the DNR says the adults involved in the shooting were hunting illegally, because firearms season for adults doesn't start until next month.
