NEW YORK (AP) - A red-tailed hawk caused quite a stir after flying through an open window of a five-story New York City apartment building. Tenant Joe Moderski says he thought he had missed a pillow fight because there were so many feathers in the hallway of the Upper West Side building. Moderski says he arrived home around 3:30 p.m. Sunday to find the hawk outside his top-floor apartment. He says the raptor flew at him, just missing his face, so he took off running.

Senior citizens at an Elkhart apartment building are suffering during this week's heat wave. Their building's air conditioning has yet to be turned on. One person who lives there was taken to the hospital for heat stroke. And with temperatures in the mid-90's, other residents are angry. “It’s just miserable,” said resident Sue Francis. “You sleep with fans on, you just literally can’t survive there.” Harris is one of about 100 residents who live at Stratford Commons, a federally-funded senior apartment building managed by a Boston company called American Properties Team, Inc. Harris and everyone else living there are still waiting for that company to turn on the central air. “Yesterday was very hot,” said Harris.

Apparently lightning really can strike twice, as students living in IU South Bend apartments learned. University Spokesman Ken Baierl describes Wednesday's events as "a string of bad luck. " When storms rolled through Wednesday, lightning struck the only occupied student housing building in the complex. Then, the same building was struck again by lightning overnight! That time the power went out, and students had to move to another building where they will stay for the rest of the summer session.

Tenants that were evacuated out of a South Bend apartment building after it was hit by a car are anxious to get the rest of their belongings. As WSBT first reported early Thursday morning, a car slammed into the building located at the corner of Olive and Lawson Streets. There is a major crack running up the building and city officials say it is unsafe and will have to be demolished. However, South Bend's Code Enforcement Office is trying to have the building stabilized enough so the people that lived there can get their things out. The building is made up of nine rooms that people rented.

MISHAWAKA - If you were near downtown Mishawaka Tuesday morning and saw lots of police in the area, that's because officers were involved in a brief standoff. At 8:59 a.m., police were dispatched to the 400 block of E. 3 rd St at Pine St where there was a report of gunshots fired. Lt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Department says officers tried to make contact with people inside a home by phone and PA system, but the people refused to come out of the house. Around 9:45 a.m., two men exited the house and were taken to the city's police station for questioning.

SOUTH BEND - Police have arrested a suspect in a shooting in the area of Colfax and Eddy Streets that injured a mother who was in her car with her children. Police were called into action around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Officers on the scene say multiple shots were fired at the car. None of the children were hit. The mom, 31-year-old Michelle Brown, was take to Memorial Hospital in good condition. Witnesses tell WSBT people who were evicted from an apartment building got into a fight with people who lived at the complex.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday a man who told South Bend Police he was shot while he was near the Allen and Van Buren streets intersection sought treatment at Memorial Hospital. Police have not released information on the man's condition nor if anyone has been arrested. Police say 28-year-old Lewis Johnson was arrested Saturday morning after a woman was taken to Memorial Hospital with stab wounds to her face and back. This happened around 4:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Kaley Street.

A St. Joseph, Mich., apartment building was evacuated Monday afternoon after fire broke out in a first-floor apartment. The fire was reported about 4:05 p.m. in the 900 block of Pearl Street, according to a departmental press release. No one was home in the apartment, and crews quickly moved people from the other units. Firefighters remained at the scene for about an hour and were able to keep the blaze from spreading across the building. There were no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Fort Wayne firefighters have rescued five people from an apartment building fire. One of the persons rescued is in critical condition at a Fort Wayne hospital after firefighters pulled that person from the smoky building Sunday morning. The Fort Wayne Fire Department says the four others all were rescued from apartment balconies and told firefighters of the fifth person inside who needed to be saved. Firefighters say the blaze began with unattended food cooking on a stove.

LAPORTE - A two-year old girl fell from a roof Friday morning in LaPorte. According to the LaPorte EMS, the child lived on the second floor in an apartment building on the 300 block of Jefferson Ave.  EMS officials say the girl climbed out of the second story window onto the first floor roof and fell off. The youngster was taken to IU Health LaPorte Hospital to be examined. An EMS spokesman says they believe the injuries were not life threatening.

BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Police are looking for several people accused of invading an apartment and injuring two men in Benton Township. 3 children were also in the building at the time but were not hurt. Police say around 10:40 p.m. Saturday, Benton Township officers were called to a home invasion/robbery at 1802 Crystal Court. 30-year-old Octavious Clark and 32-year-old Rajeshi Davis said 4 to 5 suspects armed with handguns entered the ground floor of the apartment building, demanded money from them and struck Clark and Davis with their guns.

MISHAWAKA - The owner of a condemned apartment complex in Mishawaka says he has plans to repair the building. Last week, the tenants at Princess City Apartments learned they had 24 hours to move out. Inspectors cited numerous complaints from the property since 2004 including mold issues and bed bug infestations. Some tenants were living in a Motel 6. Building Commissioner Bo Hundt says owner Randy Miller has spoken with city officials and is creating a plan for repairs but hasn't filed anything yet. Miller owns at least three properties that are in foreclosure.

No humans were injured in a South Bend apartment fire this morning, but three dogs were killed. It happened at the corner of Dubail and Carroll just after 9:30 in a house that has been turned into apartments. A woman who lives in the upstairs apartment told WSBT News there are three adults, four kids, and several pets that live there. She told us it appears the fire started downstairs. A woman in a wheelchair had to be helped out by firefighters. She and her husband were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A 7-year-old boy has died in a fire at an Indianapolis apartment building that forced several residents to leap out of second-story windows. Fire Department officials didn't immediately release the name of the boy who was killed early Saturday morning in the fire on the city's west side. The boy's mother says she tried to take her son with her as she jumped from the second floor, but lost her grip on him in the heat and smoke. Officials say the fire forced 15 people out of their homes, including four who jumped.

A South Bend apartment building is damaged and a resident is getting help to find someplace to live. The reason? South Bend Police say a car slammed into the building early Wednesday morning. The hit-and-run happened just after 4 a.m. at Laurel Wood Apartments, off Laurel Road in northern St. Joseph County. South Bend Police have not yet released information on whether the driver has been located.
