SOUTH BEND — A 24-year-old South Bend woman paid a man $20 to take her to Motel 6 in Mishawaka around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday. But the man began driving in the wrong direction. When the woman questioned him, he said he was taking a shortcut. He then displayed a pistol and told her to keep her seat belt on, the woman told police. When the car reached the 500 block of Marquette Boulevard, she jumped out of the vehicle. The man drove away, and she called police. She sustained scrapes on her knees but refused medical treatment, police said.

LONDON (AP) — Angry protesters in London have attacked a car containing Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. An Associated Press photographer saw demonstrators kick the car in Regent Street, in the heart of London's shopping district. The car then drove off. The prince's office had no immediate comment. LAKE STATION, Ind. (AP) — State police say a driver fired several shots at a car carrying three people on a northwestern Indiana highway in an apparent road rage incident. The car was struck by numerous bullets Thursday night along Interstate 80/94 near the Lake County city of Lake Station. Police say one adult in the car was injured by glass fragments but declined treatment. The other adult and a child in the car weren't hurt. Police say the people from Merrillville were westbound on the highway when a silver or gray Dodge Charger with dark tinted windows came up behind them and began flashing its headlights.

DETROIT (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. is telling U.S. dealers that new vehicles could be in short supply this summer. In a memo to dealers obtained Monday by The Associated Press, Toyota's U.S. general manager Bob Carter says new vehicle supplies could be "significantly impacted" due to production slowdowns in Japan and North America. Toyota has had trouble getting some parts after its suppliers were damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

TONASKET, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say a British Columbia man drove about 225 miles after his 75-year-old wife died in the car next to him, uncertain whether he could cross the Canadian border with her. Tonasket Police Chief Robert Burks says the 71-year-old man didn't know what to do, so he kept driving. The man was vacationing in Oregon when his wife began suffering a medical condition. They were trying to get home to Oliver, B.C., but she died near Pasco, Wash.

MICHIGAN CITY - City police on Monday were still looking for two men who bailed out of a moving car during a chase, leaving a passenger in the back seat. Police said they tried to stop the car Sunday night because it matched the description of a vehicle involved in a shooting two days earlier. The car sped across the Eighth Street bridge over Trail Creek, then the men bailed out, leaving a woman in the back seat screaming as officer Rob Grant dove into the vehicle head first.

A teenager was injured Monday evening after being struck by a car in downtown Mishawaka. The accident happened about 7:55 p.m. at the intersection of Union and Fourth streets, according to city dispatch. The teen, whose name has not been released, was taken for treatment of injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. Police did not say what caused the accident. ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) - The feet of a 24-year-old Detroit-area man failed him as he tried to use them to brake his car on a busy street. Roseville police say the man rolled into four vehicles several miles north of Detroit while sticking his feet outside his car in attempts to stop. No one was injured during Wednesday afternoon's accidents, but the man received a citation for reckless driving. His driver's license also was suspended at the time of the accidents.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A 300-pound chimpanzee that broke free from its chains has been captured after briefly wandering around a Kansas City neighborhood and smashing out the window of a police car. Police Capt. Rich Lockhart tells The Kansas City Star the department got a call about noon Tuesday that a primate was on the loose a few miles from the Kansas City Zoo. Lockhart says the ape was actually a pet that escaped from its chains. Lockhart says efforts to shoot the animal, named Sueko, with a tranquilizer dart failed.

PENDLETON — A combination of white-out conditions and traveling too fast for conditions are to blame for a State Trooper’s squad car being hit Thursday morning. Senior Trooper Aaron Gaul of the Pendleton post stated he was driving along the shoulder of I-70 westbound at mile marker 106 when a vehicle lost control and struck his driver’s side rear bumper. Gaul was traveling to assist a jackknifed semi that had slid into a ditch. I-70 was briefly shut down while the semi was pulled out. There were no injuries in the crash.
