VANDALIA, Mich. (AP) — The Cass County sheriff's department says it's investigating the death of a 3-year-old southwestern Michigan boy who apparently was kicked by a horse. The accident happened about 10:20 a.m. in Vandalia, about 75 miles south of Grand Rapids. Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. identifies the dead boy as Petr M. Klembara of Vandalia. Underwood says witnesses told deputies the boy was accidentally kicked by a horse. The sheriff says Petr was taken to Three Rivers Hospital, where he died.

SOUTH BEND -- A two month search for a Cass County murder suspect is over. Police arrested 19-year old Jaren Wade this morning at the Beacon Heights Apartment complex in South Bend.  Police say Wade shot and killed Darius Nickens outside a home on Grand Boulevard in Dowagiac in April. A neighbor told us he saw Nickens in a fight with another man before hearing gun shots. Wade is in the St. Joseph County Jail now facing seven charges, including murder.

An 18-year-old Otsego teen was critically injured early Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Cass County. Cass County police report Ryan Mannikko was driving south on Dailey Road at 12:12 a.m. when his vehicle went off the road at the southeast corner of Mathews Street and struck a tree. Mannikko was extricated from his vehicle and taken to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac. From there, he was airlifted to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, where as of 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, a nursing supervisor said he is in critical condition.

  CASS COUNTY, Mich. - Cass County police have released the identity of a man who may have drowned in a Silvercreek Township lake Wednesday night.   Police and water rescue crews were called to Indian Lake around 9 p.m Wednesday -- that's in the 55000 block of Forest Beech Road, about five miles west of Dowagiac.   Witnesses told police they saw a man fishing earlier in the evening but later noticed his boat was empty.   Several homeowners went out to the boat and discovered a body in the water.

Police say a 22-year-old Vandalia, Michigan man is dead after crashing into a tree. The accident happened around 12:45 a.m. Thursday. Police say John Grice was southbound on Cassopolis Road from U.S. 12 when his vehicle left the roadway. Alcohol and speed were a factor in the crash, say police. Grice did not have a seatbelt on.

NORTH LIBERTY - Two people who police are linking to a rash of burglaries over the last week in Cass County have been captured south of the state border near North Liberty. Around 10:30 Thursday morning, St. Joseph County (IN) police caught an adult and juvenile after the two were seen committing another break-in. The two bailed out of a car at State Road 23 and Madison Rd, just north of North Liberty. Over two dozen police officers searched cornfields with dogs, and they called on a helicopter to help with the search.

PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Cass County police have identified the two men killed in a one-car crash in rural Porter Township Tuesday night. Investigators say 19-year-old Gabriel Spencer-Forsyth of Tennessee was driving on Chapel Hill Street, just east of Baldwin Prairie Road when he lost control of his car, went off the road and hit a tree. Spencer-Forsyth was killed along with a passenger, 20-year-old Kevin Shupert of Elkhart. 19-year-old Ross Gambill of Osceola was also in the car and was taken to South Bend's Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Criminal charges have been filed against the driver involved in a deadly crash last October in Cass County. Curtis Stone, Stacey Garza, their 1-year-old son Devin and his grandmother Kathleen Marks all died in the crash along U.S. 12 in Milton Township. Police say Cecelia Chaney of Niles was eastbound on U.S. 12, just east of Bell Road when she crossed the center line. Her pickup truck hit the car head-on. Both cars rolled, ended up on their tops and then burst into flames.

A candlelight vigil Wednesday will be held at the Mishawaka home of three of the four family members killed Sunday in a fiery crash in Cass County. The 8:30 p.m. vigil will be held at 415 E. Broadway St. “This is for all people in the community to come and remember the family and show support for the 13-year-old girl who's left without her family,” Dion Collins, event organizer, told WSBT. Killed in the crash on U.S. 12 east of Bell Road were Curtis Stone, 50, Stacey Garza, 35, and their 1-year-old son, Devin Stone.
