MICHIGAN CITY -- A 19-year-old Michigan City man who police say ran from a traffic stop and was shot while struggling with an officer over his gun was charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors on Monday. A state police news release detailed the events: On Wednesday, June 20, two Michigan City officers in uniforms and assigned to the Safe Streets Team stopped a 2011 Chevy Malibu for an alleged traffic violation on Welnetz Road at 5:53 p.m. Four people were in the car, including Daniel Sherrod Jr. Sherrod ran from the traffic stop scene, with one of the two officers in pursuit.

A man was sent to the hospital Tuesday morning following a home invasion on South Bend's east side. Police say two males forced their way into a home in the 1000 block of North Ironwood, just after 4 a.m. Tuesday. One male, one female and two teenagers were home at the time of the break-in. Police say the two males broke down the front door. The male homeowner struggled with one of the men who broke in and received head wounds as a result. The woman said she awoke to find the two intruders in her bedroom.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY - Clay Edinger, a St. Joseph County voter, brought his gun with him to a polling place. He said officials there told him to leave. Edinger's attorney, Guy Relford, wants a special prosecutor appointed to look into the incident. Indiana Revised Code spells out how guns, ammunition and other firearms are regulated - the law is pretty much black and white. It describes what's allowed and what isn't, but during Tuesday's Primary a grey area was found, and it's something no one wants to talk about.

Two South Bend brothers each received more than six years in prison for their roles in an attempted robbery of a retired police officer. Prescott and Presley Brown pleaded guilty last month. Prescott received eight years for attempted battery, assisting a criminal, and marijuana possession. Presley received a six year sentence for criminal recklessness and pointing a gun. Police say they tried to rob a retired cop outside his home last November.

Indiana lawmakers passed a law last year allowing licensed gun owners to carry their weapons in certain public places, including parks. It prevents local governments from enforcing their own firearm restrictions, but not all local counties agreed last year. In fact, Elkhart County leaders voted Monday on finally adopting the law. Earlier this year, the Elkhart County Parks Department updated their policy about the carrying of handguns into county parks. Weapons of any kind were not allowed.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana gun shops are still seeing more buyers come through the doors, with some businesses worried about not being able to keep up with demand. Some store owners attribute some of the demand to lingering concerns over a possible push by President Barack Obama for tougher gun-control laws but also the popularity of television reality shows such as "Top Shot" that feature weapons and sharpshooting. The murder case against a 16-year-old Berrien County girl accused of shooting her 21-year-old boyfriend will go forward. On Monday morning Judge Tom Nelson heard testimony from five witnesses in the case against Destiny Coulson. Coulson is charged with 2nd degree murder and felony possession of a firearm. Police say Coulson was arguing with her boyfriend, David Quinn Jr, when she shot and killed him in his home on Shanghai Road the morning of January 24th.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A western Indiana man faces charges alleging that he shot at two children with a BB gun, striking one of them in the forehead. The Tribune-Star reports (http://bit.ly/xVKk7b ) 21-year-old Joshua Fields of Terre Haute was arrested Sunday after witnesses identified him as the person who fired at the youngsters. He faces a criminal recklessness charge and is jailed at the Vigo County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond. Terre Haute police who responded to Sunday night's shooting spoke to an older child who was with the elementary-school-age victim.

SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - Police say a 17-year-old accidentally fatally shot himself while playing with a gun during a celebration of the arrival of the New Year in Saginaw. The Saginaw News reports ( http://bit.ly/tWd4o1 ) Travon E. Price died after being shot in the head early Sunday. Police say he was playing with the gun inside his home after he and his 18-year-old brother had been outside firing into the air to mark the New Year. Police say Price didn't believe there were any bullets still in the revolver.

OVID, Mich. (AP) - An 18-year-old man who at first appeared to be overdosing on drugs actually was suffering from a pellet gun wound that led to his death, according to Clinton County authorities. His 19-year-old roommate was in jail Wednesday on a murder charge. A friend called 911 on Dec. 21 saying David Grant appeared to have taken a drug overdose, said Ovid police Chief Phil Cooley. Emergency responders were told Grant had been smoking synthetic marijuana.
