TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The estranged father of actress Lindsay Lohan has been denied bail in Florida. Hillsborough County jail records show Michael Lohan was being held Saturday without bond on four charges. He was arrested on domestic violence charges Tuesday. His bail was set at $5,000 and a judge warned him not to make any contact with his on-and-off girlfriend. Two days later, he was accused of violating the terms of his release by making a harassing phone call to her. Police went to arrest him and he tried to avoid them by jumping off a third-floor balcony at a Tampa hotel.

Sheriff Mike Grzegorek may have a new title and a new office that comes with it, but as a 23-year law enforcement veteran, keeping people safe is familiar territory. During his campaign, Grzegorek — most recently the assistant commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit — was careful to call himself not a politician, but a police officer. Now officially sworn in and on the job, he says his top priority is getting more officers on the street.

BERRIEN COUNTY - The Berrien County prosecutor says it's dangerous for the public, but there's no other choice. So far this year, judges there have allowed more than 340 people to get out of jail early and let dozens of others off with no jail time at all. The reason? There simply isn't enough room in the jail. State law allows the county's chief judge to decide which prisoners should be let out early and which offenders get off without serving any jail time at all because of overcrowding.

In the last three months, police say two separate men convicted of murder and released from prison early have killed again. Now, the families of the victims want to change an Indiana law to make sure what happened to them doesn't happen again. Last month Tarrance Lee was charged with murdering his wife. According to police, he had friends help him dispose of the body. Police are still trying to find it. And in June, Steven Clippinger was charged with murdering his brother and sister-in-law while their children were inside their Mishawaka home.
