HANOI, Vietnam — Former South Bend mayor and Indiana Governor Joe Kernan made his first trip back to the place where he was held as a prisoner of war for 11 months in 1972 and 1973, after his Navy reconnaissance plane was shot down. During those 11 months Joe Kernan spent most of his time in a Hanoi Prison called "the Zoo". As Kernan prepared to enter the site last week, his wife, Maggie, said she was worried. "There's bits of dread, there's curiosity. Fear of what you'll see," she said.

NEAR THAN HOWAH, Vietnam — Former South Bend mayor Joe Kernan parachuted into a Vietnamese village after his plane was hit by enemy fire in 1972. Finding that village is what Kernan wanted most during his first trip back to Vietnam since being held as a prisoner of war for 11 months. The search at times was fun, at times strange and often very emotional. Kernan has changed a lot since May 7, 1972, but before he left South Bend for Vietnam, he was convinced, despite all that time, he could find the village he parachuted into.

But the season still wasn't great for the Silver Hawks.  The team finished under 500 and attendance this year dropped about 17 percent. HANOI, Vietnam — Their nicknames are sarcastic and American given. "The Zoo" and the "Hanoi Hilton" are two spots that bring back a lot of bad memories for former South Bend mayor Joe Kernan. He spent 11 months trapped inside these two prisons during the Vietnam War. At times, visiting them nearly 40 years later was very difficult on both Kernan and his wife, Maggie, but it was also very memorable. Kernan spent some of his prison time at the more well known Hoa Lo Prison, called the Hanoi Hilton by the prisoners, but he spent most of his time at the less known "Zoo.
