According to Indiana State Police, the Indiana Toll Road eastbound lanes were shut down for a time Thursday night near Michigan City due to an accident involving a semi and a car. This happened near the 43 mile marker. One person was taken to the hospital, say police. The car was fully engulfed in fire and firefighters were working to clear it around 8:45 p.m. At 9:15 traffic was still backed up. Lanes were expected to re-open any time.

Police have released a sketch of a suspect in a Michigan City home invasion and sexual assault. The following news release was issued by Michigan City police Thursday night: There was a home invasion/sexual assault in the 2500 block of Bruce Dr. on October 26 th 2012 at 8:30pm. The victim, a young lady pulled her vehicle into her garage, after she exited a Black Male armed with a weapon forced her into the house where he committed sexual assault and robbery. On November 1 st 2012 the victim in this incident met with the Indiana State Police in order to generate a composite sketch of the suspect.

If you are taking the South Shore this morning toward Chicago, expect delays. Trains west of Michigan City are running about 10 to 15 minutes behind because of a broken rail. This is expected to affect rush hour trains arriving in Chicago until 8:45 a.m. A spokesman tells WSBT this is not related to the wind.

The following release was issued by Michigan City police on Sunday afternoon: There was a home invasion/sexual assault in the 2500 block of Bruce Dr. on October 26 th 2012 at 8:30pm.  The victim, a young lady pulled her vehicle into her garage, after she exited a young male armed with a weapon forced her into the house. The suspect [described as wearing a hoodie and about 5”7' tall] robbed and sexually assaulted the victim before jumping a fence and running northbound.  Anyone who might have information reference to this case or think they might have seen suspicious activity regarding the suspect during this timeframe of the incident is asked to please call the Michigan City Police Department (219)

MICHIGAN CITY - Employees working at City Hall in Michigan City are still shaken up after a man carrying a baseball bat smashed doors and windows there. 14 glass doors were shattered Monday afternoon, enough glass to fill 3 55-gallon drums. Police arrested 28-year-old Matthew Wolferd after tasing him. Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer says Wolford pulled up on the sidewalk, close to the building, got out of his car, and started swinging a metal baseball bat at the entrance glass doors.

MICHIGAN CITY - A cat near Michigan City was found with a bone in its mouth. According to authorities, one other bone was located underneath a bush. La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan said the bones will be turned over to a forensic anthropoligist in Indianapolis for testing to determine if they are from a human or animal. "Most of this stuff turns out to be animal bones but you want to check them just in case," said Sullivan. The bones were discovered in Pottawatamie Park, an upscale neighborhood next to Michigan City.

MICHIGAN CITY - A pair of new police cars are about to hit the streets of Michigan City, and you might be amazed what they look like. The city through South Shore Clean Cities has received a donation from the “THINK” Electric Car Company of two electric cars for the police department.  “In January, I began to inquire about the cars and their possible use,” said Michigan City Police Sgt. Chris Yagelski. “I thought the uniqueness of the cars and the fact that they were 100% “green” led me to the possible creation of a new public relations tool for the police department.

MICHIGAN CITY - LaPorte County police hope surveillance video helps them capture the man who robbed a Michigan City gas station at gunpoint. Deputies from the county sheriff's department were dispatched to the Speedway at U.S. 20 and U.S. 35 around 8 p.m. Monday. After arriving, they learned a man had walked into the store and approached the cashier, showing a semi-automatic handgun. The suspect got away with some cash. He's described as a white male, wearing a dark blue hooded coat with the hood covering his head and much of his face.
