NILES — Troopers from the Michigan State Police are investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition Sunday morning. Police were dispatched to a residence in the 3100 block of Niles-Buchanan Road in Niles Township at approximately 3:00 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about a shooting. Troopers found that a 14-year-old suspect had shot his 64-year-old grandfather while the grandfather was sleeping. Another occupant of the home then called 911 to report the shooting, according to police.

A person was killed and another has minor injuries this morning in a two-car crash on Redfield Road between Gumwood Road and Ironwood Drive in Cass County. This happened just after 7 a.m., according to police dispatch.Police say 27-year-old Alan Steven of Elkhart lost control on the snow-covered road and slid into an oncoming pickup driven by 35-year-old James Heiermann of Niles. Steven was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt. Michigan State Police are investigating.

NILES — A Buchanan grandfather has died after being shot early Sunday by his 14-year-old grandson, who now faces felony murder charges, according to troopers from the Michigan State Police. Officers at the Niles post tell WSBT News that the 64-year-old grandfather died about 2 p.m. His name has not been released. Police were dispatched to a residence in the 3100 block of Niles-Buchanan Road at approximately 3:00 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about a shooting. Troopers found that the teen suspect had shot the grandfather as he was sleeping.

Police say a man involved in a deadly hit-and-run accident last night has turned himself in. Now, the family of the victim speaks out.  "You know if you hit somebody, you should stop. But he didn't. I hope he just gets justice out of this," said Aron Brigham, the victim's nephew. Charles Lintz, 51, died after being hit by a car on M-60 near Lilac Street, just east of Niles. The accident happened sometime after 9 Sunday night. A passerby saw Lintz's body in the road with no shoes on and a jacket pulled up over his head.

NILES, Mich. -- Sworn to serve and protect, now a Niles City police officer has been arrested and booked on charges for an alleged sex crime. Police spent hours sifting through a Niles City police officer's home in the 1700 block of Cass Street Friday evening. Now, that officer has been suspended and is being investigated by the Michigan State Police.  Police aren't releasing the name of that officer, but neighbors have identified him as Ivery Cross and the Berrien County Jail confirmed that Cross was booked Friday on two felony charges of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.

NILES — A husband and wife found dead Friday afternoon in their home just east of the city limits are suspected to be the victims of a double homicide. Authorities identified the couple as Carolyn M. Tarwacki, 39, and John F. Tarwacki, 40. Police spent hours Friday afternoon searching for clues around the Tarwacki home, in the 900 block of Carberry Road in Howard Township. Police were called to the Tarwackis’ house about 12:45 p.m. after a relative found their bodies while doing a check of the house.

LAKESIDE - Police are investigating a weekend home invasion in Berrien County that left a woman badly injured. The small town of Lakeside is known for its quaint antique shops, roadside diners and close neighbors. This weekend the quiet area received quite a shock after learning one of their long-time residents was attacked. It happened between 11:15 and 11:30 Friday night in the 8700 block of East Road in Lakeside, north of New Buffalo. Police say a masked man broke into the home of 61-year old Ann Dawson.

NILES — Michigan State Police in Niles are continuing to investigate an incident Friday involving a 9-year-old girl who was approached by the driver of a pickup truck. Police said the girl was standing at the end of her driveway in the 31000 block of U. S. 12 East, just east of Gumwood Road, shortly after 7:30 a.m. when the older model, rusty, two-door pickup occupied by a lone man, described only as having a tan, pulled up next to her. The girl became frightened, police said, and ran back to her home.

Michigan State Police issued an Amber Alert Wednesday afternoon for a missing 2-year-old girl. Jozlynn Mari Martinez was last seen in her bed about 11 Tuesday night at her Grand Rapids home. She has brown eyes and brown hair and is about 2 feet 9 inches tall. She is believed to be with Jeffrey Lynn Malmbert, who is living with Jozlynn and her mother. Police say he also took a large amount of money from the home. Malmbert was wearing a blue Grand Valley State University hoody when he was last seen.

Police say 11 people, including two juveniles, were arrested Tuesday evening in Benton Harbor after a street disturbance broke out about 6:30 p.m. Police Chief Roger Lange told SBT24/7 News that the nine adults all went to jail after several fights broke out at the intersection of Empire Avenue and Pavone Street. Lange said he wasn’t clear on what caused the unrest or exactly how large the crowd was, but said rumors that a 12-year-old girl had been stabbed proved unfounded. No one was injured, including police, he said.
