A new Notre Dame football season begins this weekend. Coach Brian Kelly met with the media Tuesday to preview Saturday's season opener against Navy in Ireland. There's always excitement when the new Notre Dame football season begins.   With everything unique about this opener: From the location: Ireland to the fact that the Irish will be starting a quarterback with no experience, the anticipation may be a little larger than normal. Kelly knows that Navy presents some challenges, but he's excited to finally see his team in action when it counts!

At least two former Notre Dame football players will participate in the NFL Scouting Combine. Linebacker Darius Fleming told WSBT he has been invited to the event, held Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis, and so has cornerback Robert Blanton. Fleming said he was invited via email, which he received Friday, the day after the Irish lost 18-14 to Florida State in the Champs Sports Bowl. Fleming said he will train at EFT Sports Performance in Northbrook, Ill., the same place former Irish running back Robert Hughes trained last year before the draft.

A brand new college football season kicks off this weekend.  And with all due respect to Christmas, this is the most wonderful time of the year.   Here's why I LOVE college football. I love Joe - Pa, and whiteouts in Happy Valley. I love Defend the Rock, the World's largest Drum, and "Hey-ey-ey ey! SHOUT!" I love the rise of the Cardinal and the fall of Troy.   I love Sparty, Goldy, Bucky, Ralphie and UGA. I love Hook Em Horns and Roll Tide.

The parents of Declan Sullivan, the 20-year-old Notre Dame student who was killed Wednesday while filming the Notre Dame Football practice, issued this statement to the public Saturday. This week our family lost Declan Drumm Sullivan in a tragic accident on the University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend, IN. Declan loved Notre Dame. He felt privileged to have a role with the football program videotaping games and practices. The grief we feel is tempered by the knowledge that Dec was doing what he loved in the place he most wanted to be. We are grateful for the consideration shown to us by the Notre Dame administration and everyone associated with the University.

I want to say a few words about the great Bubba Smith who died on August 3 rd . But to put Bubba in his proper perspective I need to say a few words about the 1966 Notre Dame Football team.  It was the greatest Notre Dame team I ever saw and I would argue that point with any hard core Irish fan, even those who remember the great, post World War Two Frank Leahy teams. How good were the '66 Irish? In a ten game season, they had six shutouts. Of the four teams that managed to score on them only one (Purdue with 14 points)

April's Notre Dame Spring Blue-Gold game was the 30 th I have worked and about the 40 th I have attended, and still there was a first. It was the first time I have ever heard a player booed at the spring game, which is no more than a glorified scrimmage. The player was quarterback Tommy Rees. I couldn't believe it, but maybe if I had spent a little more time on line reading various Notre Dame fan forums I could have easily believed it.  Then again I would rather have a root canal than spend a lot of time on line reading fan forums, because some of these people are not exactly real fans.

Before looking forward to Saturday's showdown with the Sooners, it's appropriate to look back one last time on how the Irish have arrived at 7-0. Notre Dame's last two victories were anything but pretty. They had to overcome mistakes and late deficits, to win over Stanford and BYU. And in both wins, the Irish exhibited something we haven't seen in awhile. Toughness. "The pride and tradition of Notre Dame football will not be left to the weak or timid or non-committed," head coach Brian Kelly preaches.  "That's in our locker room.
