Indiana State Police are investigating a serious crash involving one of their own. It will likely be days or weeks before we know who's responsible for the crash and how it happened. But there are questions about why ISP didn't ask for help in the investigation from an outside agency. The crash that put 3 people in the hospital happened around 8 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Ireland and Linden Roads. Late Friday, 19-year-old Robert Perez of Mishawaka was still listed in critical condition and his passenger, 20-year-old Danielle Cutler of South Bend, was in fair condition, according to a spokesman at Memorial Hospital.

A lawsuit against a Benton Harbor police officer will go forward after a suspect died while in custody. A federal appeals court says the officer does not have immunity. That means jurors can determine whether the officer disregarded risks by keeping Doyle Jackson in a squad car for 40 minutes after a struggle in 2007. Jackson was then taken to the Berrien County jail where a nurse found him unresponsive. He died at a hospital. Jackson was allegedly drunk and had been hit with a stun gun at least a dozen times.

ELKHART - A food-based fundraiser played out in Elkhart Saturday to help out a city police officer. Police were on a “steak out.” It wasn't the kind to catch a criminal, but they cooked up steak for a steak and potato fundraiser to benefit Sergeant Scott Hupp. Hupp is fighting cancer and has lost his hair. There were a lot of bald heads at the benefit. That's because many of his fellow officers shaved their heads Friday in solidarity. Saturday's event was staged by the Elkhart FOP. “The monetary loss from not being able to work your regular job or any part-time jobs that you may have is astronomical,” said Elkhart FOP Lodge 52 member Jim Ballard.
