LaPorte High School is taking a new approach to teach kids how to be financially responsible. There is a bank branch now open inside the high school. It is just for students and faculty but the purpose is to teach kids about financial responsibility early -- with parent and school supervision. Jasmine King is LaPorte Savings Bank's newest teller. It is her first job, and the best part, she doesn't have to leave school to do it. King works at the Slicer Branch which is inside LaPorte High School.

SOUTH BEND - Can working on Legos as a kid help shape what your job is as an adult? Maybe some local middle school students will now consider careers in engineering after working with Notre Dame students and professional engineers to build a Lego engine. The Lego build happened in January, but the students who participated are still talking about it. It was part of an Automotive Road Show held at Notre Dame. The event seeks to recruit talent to stay in Indiana and work in the automotive industry.

BENTON HARBOR - Top Michigan education officials reportedly appear optimistic Benton Harbor schools will be able to lower their budget deficit by the end of the school year. State Schools Superintendent Mike Flanagan and some officials with the state's Department of Education have released an updated report of nearly 100 school districts that will either clear, lower or raise their deficits by the end of the fiscal year in June. That's according to online news site, Mlive.com . Benton Harbor Area schools were projected to end the fiscal year with a reduced deficit.

Lakeshore Public Schools is asking voters to pass 2 new bonds to make schools better throughout the district. The proposals total $53-million. The plans were laid out at a community forum Monday night. The money being asked for is split into 2 separate bonds. The first proposal is for nearly $36-million in district-wide infrastructure and technology improvements. As well as improvements to programs at the middle and high schools. The main purpose for the second proposal is $9-million to build a new elementary school near Baroda.

KNOX - 14 children and 2 adults were taken to the hospital after a flat-bed truck hit a Head Start school bus in Knox Monday morning. The accident happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. CST, at Lake and Heaton Streets. Heaton is also U.S. 35. According to witnesses on the scene, police say the driver of the truck ran a red light and hit the driver's area of the school bus. The children and adults on the bus who were banged up were treated at IU Health Starke Memorial System for precautionary reasons.

Keeping an eye on education: a school in Niles is stirring up a lot of buzz with its approach to teaching. Niles New Tech Entrepreneurial Academy is in its second year. Enrollment was Saturday morning and there's been a lot of interest. Parents and students lined up in the wee hours of the morning for enrollment. "Me and my mom work up pretty early, it really didn't matter cause we were just so excited," said sophomore Christian Pratt. That was a year ago and now Christian is a sophomore at New Tech.
