ELKHART - It's been a full year since a tragic accident near Middlebury killed two Amish children and injured three others. Now, Elkhart County Sheriff Brad Rogers has unveiled a new partnership with members of the Amish community. On Labor Day of 2011, an SUV hit the pony cart 6 children were riding. 10-year-old Jenna Miller and 7-year-old Jolisa Miller died in the accident that raised questions about the laws surrounding the use of horse-drawn carts and buggies on the roadways.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Documents say a Kalamazoo County Jail deputy was fired following the suicide of an inmate this year. The Kalamazoo Gazette reports ( http://bit.ly/TjcdcT ) Monday the sheriff's department decided that the March 5 death of Derrick Burroughs may have been preventable if proper policy was followed. The newspaper obtained details of the investigation following a request under the state's Freedom of Information Act. The deputy was fired in April, following an internal investigation.

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - A sheriff's K-9 in suburban Detroit has been fatally shot by its handler after the dog attacked him during a visit to a veterinarian. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement it's "an extremely sad situation on every front," noting the 5-year-old German Shepherd named Gunner was part of the handler's family. The department says the dog was taken to the veterinarian Thursday because it had started to exhibit "serious aggression.

They're the ones who protect us from crime, but now one local police agency is a crime victim. They know who, but investigators are trying to figure out how hackers were able to take over the Berrien County Sheriff's Department website. Anonymous IRC, a group known for targeting government websites, started a cyber attack last Monday dubbed “Shoot the Sheriff Sunday.” It's believed hackers somehow gained passwords of several county IT employees who update the website.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY - The man who was shot and killed by a Berrien County sheriff's deputy had a long history with police. William Robert Barker of Niles died from multiple gunshot wounds, said St. Joseph County Deputy Coroner Nancy Pemberton.   But the official autopsy results from Barker's body will take approximately six to eight weeks to be processed. The name of the officer who shot Barker multiple times is Trent Babcock. He's been on the force more than 15 years.

GRAYLING, Mich. (AP) - Authorities in northern Michigan say a man who pulled out a knife on police has been fatally shot. The Crawford County sheriff's office says a deputy and a Grayling officer were attempting to serve a court order Friday when the shooting occurred. The statement doesn't indicate which officer fired the fatal shot. The victim's name has not been released. Sheriff Kirk Wakefield says Michigan State Police will handle the investigation.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco's new sheriff used his swearing-in ceremony Sunday to speak publicly for the first time about allegations that he was involved in a domestic abuse incident. Former city supervisor Ross Mirkarimi took the oath of office at the city's War Memorial Veterans Building with his wife, Eliana Lopez, smiling at his side and holding their young child. Mirkarimi denied that he had ever abused his wife, but acknowledged the controversy he's involved in as he takes over as San Francisco's first new sheriff in more than 30 years.

ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) - A northeast Kansas sheriff says a man who fatally shot an Atchison police sergeant doesn't appear linked to the home where the officer was serving a nuisance order. Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon says the shooter, identified as 25-year-old Skyler Barbee, came out of nowhere about 4 p.m. Friday and shot 46-year-old Sgt. David Enzbrenner in the head before fatally shooting himself. The sheriff says investigators have no idea what compelled Barbee to shoot the 24-year police department veteran.

LAPORTE - Police say a LaPorte County home was burglarized between late Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. The burglars, say police, broke into a detached garage in the 3500 block of US Highway 35, between 3 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.  They stole a blue Miller portable MIG welder and a purple 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. According to police, the car is very distinctive because of its modified racing car appearance and has a “NMCA DRAG RACING” sticker on the top of the windshield.

GRASS LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Jackson County's sheriff says two men whose bodies were found in a burning car died of gunshot wounds. The 32-year-olds were found Monday in a car at Schlee Waterfowl Preserve in Grass Lake Township, near Jackson. The sheriff's department identifies the men as Anthony D. Hannah of Jackson and Lansing and Shemel Thomas of Jackson. Sheriff Steve Rand tells WILX-TV (http://j.mp/vnde8o) that Hannah and Thomas had long criminal records and have served time for drug convictions.
