INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis-based drugmaker Eli Lilly and Co. wants to find out how dogs sense diabetes in people. The drug company is studying how hypoglycemia alert dogs sense low blood sugar in humans. The Indianapolis Star reported Monday ( http://indy.st/OgELSO ) the company will work with the Indiana Canine Assistance Network to find an answer. Lilly tells the Star its scientists are investigating whether dogs' sharp sense of smell allow them to detect changes in human chemistry.

Two people were taken to hospitals after an accident involving an ATV and a SUV in Elkhart Thursday night, police said. The accident happened at Sugar Maple Lane and Osolo Road at 6:48 p.m., the dispatcher said. A man, Adam Smith, was believed to be driving the ATV. He was transported to South Bend Memorial where he is in the ICU in critical condition. A woman, Tiffany Swindle, who was a passenger on the ATV was taken to Elkhart General hospital to be treated and released. Witnesses say the ATV was heading north on Osolo Road when it ran into an SUV that was turning onto Sugar Maple Lane.
