SOUTH BEND — Schurz Communications announced today that radio chief Sally Brown is president and general manager of WSBT-TV and Radio. In making the appointment, Senior Vice President Marci Burdick said, "Sally Brown’s positive energy and leadership abilities are recognized in our company and across the Michiana area. "  Former TV President/GM John Mann will move into a consulting role with Schurz, Burdick announced. Schurz owns The South Bend Tribune, in addition to many other newspapers and broadcast stations across the country.

Hundreds of Boy and Girl Scouts with every scout and age division between toured the WSBT studios Saturday during WSBT's first "Scout Day" event. Scouts from all around Michiana saw firsthand key aspects of television and radio broadcasts. WSBT anchors Debra Daniel, Cindy Ward, Dustin Grove and Kirk Mason met scouts on the news set. In the newsroom, News Director John Haferkamp fielded questions and revealed how social media relates to the news media. Undoubtedly the most popular tour point was the "green wall" on the WSBT-TV weather set. Chief Meteorologist Paul Emmick and his team of meteorologists Cari Peugeot, Abby Weppler and Erik Larson showed scouts the fun side of being a weather forecaster.

Notre Dame will open up the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Friday night, when the Irish face Iowa State at 9:45 PM ET in Dayton, Ohio.  The game will be televised on WSBT-TV.  Other NCAA tournament 2nd round games featuring area teams that will carried on WSBT-TV include Valparaiso vs Michigan State (Thur, 12:15 PM) and South Dakota State vs Michigan (Thur, 7:15 PM).  Indiana will face the winner of LIU-Brooklyn and James Madison at 4:10 PM Friday on TBS.  Butler will face Bucknell at 12:40 PM Thursday on TruTV.

A Minnesota woman who caused a health scare aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Detroit ... causing the plane to be kept on the tarmac at Midway International Airport Thursday for three hours ... says it was all a misunderstanding over bug bites. WSBT spoke exclusively with passenger Karla Ahern. She was sitting behind Lise Sievers who was returning from Ghana and had a rash. Ahern says the flight attendant announced over the intercom the flight was being detained because someone on board could have an infectious disease.

OSCEOLA - What happened the day a 23-month-old South Bend girl nearly drowned? For the first time, we hear from one of the Osceola women who raised little Skyler Bullocks most of her life. Dawn Nemeth was Skyler Bullocks' foster mother and she was in charge of Skyler the day she was pulled from a pool. She died from her injuries September 15. Skyler was 3 days old when Dawn Nemeth became her foster mother. Skyler was in foster care until the end of June when her biological mother, Johnanna Bullocks, regained custody of her. We brought you an interview with Bullocks on Monday.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o will be interviewed by Katie Couric, the first on-camera interview given by the All-American since news broke about the dead girlfriend hoax.   Te'o and his parents will appear on Couric's syndicated talk show Thursday at 4 p.m. on WSBT-TV.   Te'o gave an off-camera interview with ESPN on Friday night. He insists he was the victim of the hoax, not a participant. The Heisman Trophy runner-up said he had an online romance with a woman he never met and in September was informed that the woman died from leukemia.
